Thursday, 2/6 - No classes; indoor play activities

Classes at Broadmoor Musikgarten Academy are closed again today, as we follow the District 12 closure policy.

If you are looking for some active, indoor movement, here's some suggestions:
Ring Around the Rosey
The Mulberry Bush
Pop Goes the Weasel
Jimmy Crack Corn
Looby Loo
Round and Round the Garden

Suggest a few motions, then let your child(ren) lead the activity!  Ask them to label the motion and demonstrate it to you, then play along as best you can. It's fun to intersperse small, large and silly movements like nodding your head, lumbering like a gorilla, and wiggling or tickling.  It increases your child(ren)'s vocabulary, too.

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

Classes at Broadmoor Musikgarten Academy are closed today! What shall we do on a cold winter's day? How about singing, dancing and playing with the songs on your CD from music class?

Just a reminder of our snow day policy: when District 12 closes, classes are cancelled.  If D-12 has a two-hour delay, check here, our Facebook page or contact your teacher to check the status of your class.

Wintery weather is here...

Now that we have snow on the ground, it really feels like December!  I hope you got a chance to play in the snow with your little ones, or snuggle up with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book.  Whatever the case, it's nice to see some of the white stuff!

Just a reminder - if District 20 and/or District 12 cancels school due to weather, then classes at the Broadmoor Musikgarten Academy are cancelled as well.  We factor in some extra days for just such occasions.  :-)  If there is a two-hour delay in either district, this blog and our Facebook page will reflect the status of classes.  Additionally, our teachers will contact the families through voice and e-mail contact info.

Stay safe and warm!

Fall 2012 Schedule (draft)

Thank you for another wonderful year of music!  We’ve had a great time together, don’t you think?  As we transition into the official start of summer, we wanted to let you know what is happening over the summer and our plans for the fall.

This summer we are hoping to offer some multi-age classes at Meadows Park Community Center.  The church received a grant to offer programs to there, and we would love to have our families take part in that if the opportunity is present.  Check back for more details!

Also, as some may know, Brenda will be homeschooling her youngest child, Justin, for Kindergarten next year.  With that in mind, as well as the input received from you, we have drafted a schedule for the fall, as follows:

Music Discovery (3 – 5 yrs old)

Classes cancelled: 4/3

Stay safe and warm!  Why not enjoy the day with some music?  Bounce to 'Hey, My Kitten', or play 'The Old Grey Cat' with your children.  Follow your child's lead.  How about 'Walk and Stop' or 'The Workshop'?  Bring out your old CDs and witness their delight at hearing their old favorites!

Musings on Musikgarten

1. Musikgarten (MG) is based in the aural and oral tradtion rather than using visual stimuli - which stimulates and trains their auditory skills as well as their imagination and creative thinking skills

2. MG has high quality music CDs, the "gourmet" of children's music

3. MG emphasizes traditional music from cultures around the world, including American folk music, in order to keep these rich, musical treasures alive

4. MG offers the gift of simplicity in it's affordable family materials, rather than glitzy or cutesy home materials

5. MG offers great support and in-person training for their teachers, from a very personable staff that feels like family.

6. MG uses the music and magic of nature in their progtrams to connect with the child's sense of wonder and to encourage families to experience nature together.

7. MG is a sequential and developmental music and movement program for children that leads to music literacy

8.MG offers a wonderful blending or music education (through Lorna Heyge) with Montessori education (through Audrey Sillick) to bring together the current research of how children learn musically, etc. and the strong belief in the wonderful potential of the young child.

For more information about our current course offerings or to schedule a free class, please e-mail us at broadmoormusicinfo@gmail.com or call Brenda at (719) 237-3499.  Class descriptions can be found at http://www.broadmoorchurch.org/Default.aspx?pageId=408224

There's still time to register!

Just wanted to remind you that it's not too late to join our classes.  Most classes have open registration throughout the semester, and because we recognize the sacrifices families make in these tough economic times, we prorate tuition for those families who begin later in the semester. Fall Semester 2011 Begins: Tips for Success

I just wanted to give you a couple of tips to help make things go a little smoother for you!

- If possible, try to arrive five to ten minutes prior to class.  I'll have some toys out for the the children to offer some quiet play to ease the transition to a new place with new people. :-)

- Please remove shoes prior to music class.  We do this in part to keep the room a little neater but primarily so that children have an opportunity to feel the ground with their feet and to allow us to engage in games with their feet (particularly with the younger crowd, three and under).  If your child utilizes equipment (braces, orthotics, etc) or just really dislikes going without shoes, please let me know.

- Dress comfortably!  as you know, most children like to go, go, go!  This is a music and movement class, and you are asked to actively participate with your child.  If you have a physical limitation and need to use a chair, please let me know.  Our activities can all be easily adapted.  Your safety and comfort, as well as that of your child's, are important to me.

- Follow your child.  This is a new situation; let the child determine how much (or how little) they choose to participate.  With some age groups, it takes seven to eight weeks before they get comfortable, depending on the child.  We emphasize process, not performance.  It is very common for a child to sit meekly in class, seemingly choosing not to participate, then go home and do some of the activites!  This is natural and expected.  Reinforcing music classes at home is vital and such fun!

Fast Fact: Numerous studies have demonstrated early childhood (birth to nine years old) is the optimum time frame to introduce music for brain development. We are glad you have chosen to prioritize your child's development with this fun and enriching program.  Here's a link you may find interesting on the importance of music in early childhood: http://www.edact.com/blog/?p=24

Questions?  Please contact us via e-mail, Facebook: Broadmoor Musikgarten Academy (or the badge on the side of the page), or phone at 237-3499.

More Musikgarten Options!

- It's all about you, our customers!
You asked, and we listened.  Many people have indicated their preschool schedule conflicted with the classes we offer, so we have brought another teacher on board to offer more classes!  So, if Wednesday mornings work for your schedule, and you have a baby or a toddler, please let us know!  When enough families have committed to a class, we'll notify you and get started making music together!  Finally, if you have a preschooler, we're looking for friends to start a Music Discovery class for three to five year olds on Fridays.  Please contact us immediately (via e-mail or call us at 237-3499) to be placed on a waiting list!

- Sprechen Sie Deutsch? (translation: Do you speak German?)
We have a very special and unique opportunity to offer classes...in German!  These classes will also take place on Wednesdays.  Again, if you're interested, please contact us via e-mail or call us at 237-3499 or at the church, 473-1807.  Early childhood is an excellent time to introduce a foreign language.

- Speaking of foreign languages, interested in American Sign Language (ASL)?
In case you didn't know, we do incorporate some age-appropriate American Sign Language  (ASL) during our classes on Mondays, so if you (or a family you know) are interested in exposure to this beautiful and fun language, or if a child utilizes ASL as their preferred means of communication, please spread the word!

Again, if you have any questions or would like additional information, please contact us via e-mail or call us at 237-3499 or through the church, 473-1807.  We can also be contacted through Facebook - just search for Braodmoor Musikgarten Academy! :-)

Such a listening foundation will lead to long-term success with music reading in future classes.

In part II, Music Makers: Around the World, your child will explore the music of the British Isles, Germany, and our own Amerindian and African-American music heritage. They will learn songs, dances, stories, rituals, and customs of these cultures to help her feel and understand others around the world. The critically-acclaimed and highly successful Musikgarten keyboard is designed as a three-year program. This unique, group approach to keyboard develops aural skills; involves children in singing and movement activities; is based on a repertoire of melodic, tonal, and rhythm patterns, and familiar songs; prepares a child to succeed in traditional piano lessons; leads to true music literacy, enabling the child to "hear what s/he sees" and "see what s/he hears"; follows a careful sequence in teaching the children to read music, including notation games, mystery songs, and dictation activities; provides a solid musical foundation for all subsequent music making; is a logical follow-up to early-childhood music classes; is a sensible starting place for "beginners" who are too old for early-childhood offerings; enables kids to figure out how to play their favorite songs; starts in a five-finger position; helps kids to aurally recognize patterns within songs and utilizes solfege as a means of naming and organizing those patterns; begins with a chord approach and encourages kids to figure out the appropriate accompaniment as they begin to recognize melodic/harmonic relationships.

More than music: addressing common misconceptions, part 2

This is the second in a series addressing some comments we have heard periodically about misconceptions families may have about music and movement classes.

As children mature, we may offer a family the option of moving to a different class. For example, if a child turned three years old in July, we may encourage the family to enroll in a Family Music for Toddlers class. At the semester break, when the child is about three and a half, we may encourage the family to consider a Music Discovery class for that child, as it would be more developmentally appropriate. Sometimes we encounter families who feel, because their child is older in a class (toddler classes range from 15 mos. - 3 1/2 years old), that the class will be too simplistic for their child. One of the strengths of the classes, is that it gives the younger children the opportunity to learn from the older children in attendance. Additionally, an older child may have a different perspective or response to an activity. Families entering their second year of the toddler curriculum have observed and shared a marked change in their child's participation during class sessions and in how their child(ren) experience the activity.

One of the tenets and strengths of Musikgarten is implementing a method for creating a strong foundation. A well-laid foundation bolsters children's confidence and enables them to be successful and joyful learners. As children mature, the activities can be modified and extended to meet the need of those who are more sophisticated or simplified to meet those who are at a different stage of development.

If you have any concerns about the class encouraging your child's overall development, including language and social skills, fine and gross motor skills, cognitive abilities, etc., please let your teacher know. Teaching is our passion, and we love seeing your children grow and change. Thank you for sharing your precious treasures with us!
